New life to old faithful
I helped a friend build an Ebike. We started out with his old Giant MTB. It was a good bike in its day (1995!) The Rockshox Judy fork was seized. I freed it up but it was like riding with a pogo stick on the front. The bike was old and the handle bars were rusty. It didn’t make sense to pour money into this thing. I searched Ebay for a good used fork but nothing looked good and many had the wrong steer tube. I stumbled upon the (Suntour XCR 26" MTB Air Suspension Fork // 1-1/8" // 120mm // QR) and figured at least it was new. For the price and the features we took a shot. It could not be worse than what was on there. In the end we were very impressed.
The fork transformed this bike into a plush smooth riding Cadillac! The plan from the beginning was to put the motor on the bike and see how it worked. If he liked it we would look for a better bike and transfer all the parts later. Once we added the Suntour fork there was no need to buy a better bike. The fork was heavy-ish but not much heavier than what we took off. It was no big deal. Did I mention the bike is electric powered? My point is that even though the fork is on the heavy side the ride and comfort was improved beyond expectations. We each took the bike for a test ride. Both of us then checked the tire pressure in on the rear. The ride was so soft that we assumed the back tire was low on air.
I understand the spandex wearing weight wienie crowd will turn their nose up to this fork. I appreciate weight is a big deal when you are struggling up a steep hill. But when you have 500 watts of power at the twist of the throttle you don’t even have to get off the seat to climb that same hill. So you can save the 3 pounds of weight and I will save 300 dollars!
Looking for a smooth ride without breaking the bank? Buy this fork.
