Worth it's Weight in Gold
I bought this about a year ago and I'm still surprised how many tricks in this book I've actually used. Not to mention how many tricks I've forgotten over the years that were right here waiting for me to rediscover. This is a widespread arrangement of magic, that has something for every kind of magician. For a beginner in magic this book is an encyclopedia of material for around the price you would normally pay for an effect. For the intermediate magicians this is your point of reference for all things magic that you may be rusty at from not performing in a while. The book ranges from clever tricks to fool your friends to elaborate stage magic such as floating and assistant in mid air. The fundamentals and advice are top notch. I also like how some tricks and flourishes have a few words on the inventors and history of the trick. A book like this teaches young magicians most of the fundamentals that usually get skipped over when you jump into magic by learning through online dealers. This book has more material and routines then you'll find in any beginner crash course in magic. The card and coin chapters are the perfect intro into close up magic. Learn in detail from wonderful illustrations and clever wording, how to get the effects down with practice. Whether it's cards, coins, closeup, stage, or mentalism the chapters will guide you along from beginner to advanced effects. Not to mention a full cup and balls routine. You would think that since the book centers around journal entrys from magician MR. Mysterio, who died in 1936, that some of the tricks would be out dated. But the book features many tricks that came out afer Mysterio died. For example the effect Cellular Psychic is a mentalism effect using a cellphone and having a spectator select a freely chosen item, then the magician calls a friend from anyone in the audience's phone and sure enough the person on the line knows what the spectator picked before the call. I mostly do closeup or street magic and I used a lot of the tricks here for gathering material and for tightening up my fundamentals. However, if I decide to branch off and try other forms of magic this will be where I look first. Learning from a book has never been this easy.

Ok gift for a Beginner....
The book offers readers a wide range of tricks that will wow the public but falls short of the promise. I found it to be visually impressive as I'm used to learning from illustrations in these types of books. However, I think the only one who would benefit from this book is an extreme beginner in magic. Most of the tricks in here you probably already know. This entire book would be just a chapter in any other crash course in magic. Material ranges from tricks your uncle would do when you were younger, to the levitation that David Blaine did ages ago on TV. Considering it came out in '06 it should have offered new material on the subject and included some intermediate effects. Otherwise this should have been listed as a beginners guide to close up magic. Also it's lacking in mentalism effects that could have help the overall value. With that said not all the tricks in here are that bad. Here's some good effects the book offers if you don't already know them. *Dexterous Disappearance- A classic sleight to make a card disappear into thin air. Super Visual *Ashes on Arm- A chosen card appears on the arm of the magician. *Glassed- Smash a bottle and eat the glass. This trick has potential. Nice idea here. *Eye Popper- Mac King's classic effect where you stab your eye with a fork and white goo squirts out. Great for restaurants. *Jacket Levitation- Levitation using a jacket. Visually it's kind of obvious but will give you ideas for other levitations. *Coin Roll- This is a flourish where you roll a coin across your knuckles. Great intro into a coin routine. This should give you an good idea of what's inside the book. There's also some pretty decent stuff on card flourishes. Overall not a bad gift for someone interested in starting out. If you want a great book on magic I highly recommend Mysterios Encyclopedia of Magic and Conjuring.
