A real piece of history
This book details background information focused on whaling and the perils of whaling in early 19th century. The Essex was rammed by a whale on Nov 20 1820 and provides detailed information about the survivors, provided by the remaining crew. the illustrations and maps are excellent and gives the reader all the information about the incident. Excellent resource about the time period, 1820, and real survival story with better than reality TV,

The Great Sperm Whale is educational and full of facts and interesting facts from prehistoric era to modern time, turn of century at the beginning of the 20th. century, the end of mast ships for whaling. The book covers more than the sperm whale. Battle with the giant squids. Terrific book. I wish the instructed this 60 years ago.
