Typical Maxon excellent quality, great multi tap sound.
On the commonly used scale of "warm sounding" the AD-9 Pro is fairly neutral, meaning that the delayed signal sounds like the dry signal. With my AD-80 and AD-900, the delayed signal sounds "warmer", or less bright than the dry signal. If you start with a warm dry sound, the AD-9 Pro will give you a warm delay sound. The outstanding feature of this pedal, shared only with the AD-999 Pro is the multi tap head setting, which gives a second "head" repeat not evenly spaced between the first and next repeats. Using delay for ambient room sound, this is much more realistic than a single evenly spaced repeat, as not many rooms have only one wall reflecting sound back at you. If you like the multi tap sound, the AD-999 Pro does it even better with three extra taps, but the AD-9 Pro is the only battery powered multi tap true analog delay available (that I know of, could be others). It sounds great for slapback as well, but on a dollar for millisecond basis it's not the best deal if you don't want the multi tap. OTOH, if you haven't used a multi tap delay you may not yet know how much you really want it. Build quality is second to none, Maxon cuts no corners here and the value is as solid as the pedal. But I did hunt for a less than retail price, expensive, ouch!

The peak of AD quality and not likely to ever be equalled.
The AD900 is arguably the best AD ever made. Long out of production and well known for great sound, the price is generally high, but is actually a good value if you want to buy one and not end up shopping for a better AD.

Well tuned EQ and no grit
2 of 2 found this helpful While the price is a bit high for the features, it seems more refined than much of the competition.
The treble and bass knobs have center detents, and the eq is actually flat when set there, so it is easy to get the results you want without even hearing it, where more often the eq knob position and resulting tone are arbitrary and hard to predict.
With the gain all the way down and the volume set at unity, the pedal sounds the same on as off, which may not seem like an important feature if you don't need it.
But it is easier to make a pedal that changes your sound than one that preserves your sound, and with the RC booster you're not stuck with a built in sound, so you can probably get more different sounds out of it as your needs change.
With the gain all the way up and the volume set anywhere, the pedal does not add any grit or graininess to the sound, yet it fattens or thickens the sound, which is another thing that not many pedals manage to do, add girth without grit.
The Treble and Bass controls are active and can dial in a mid hump, as well as adding clean bass boost, or whatever other tone sculpting you might need.
If you do need to add some grit you can do that by overdriving the input of your amp, but the whole point of this pedal is it's ability to actually start transparent, and alter only what you target without adding its own preset voice.
