Wounds & Manuka Honey
3 of 3 found this helpful About 10 years ago I was 'poohooed' by a vet for using Manuka Honey 30+ (minimum) but 2 weeks later he could not believe the progress of the healing and told me to keep doing whatever I was doing.
10 years on and vets (and vet schools) are using Manuka.
Back then doing my research for another horse, I read an article about a Welsh hospital using Manuka pads in an effort to help a patient's shoulder heal properly and be pain free - several operations had not helped the pain or the healing but the Manuka dressings did!
The pads were very expensive and I had never seen any medical grade Manuka available so bought the highest umf I could get my hands on.
Now we can get Medical Grade easily and at an affordable price making it available to everyone, those in the know and those scared to get the wrong stuff and if in doubt buy the medical grade you cannot go wrong.
Anything under 10+umf has no healing properties and the higher the umf the better.
Currently using on one of my horse's bad leg wound that was cut down from hock to near fetlock (length of half her hind leg) and the skin hanging like a torn corner - 6 weeks later we are nearly healed with only a tiny corner of lost flesh from the hanging skin (was apparent at 48hr check after accident) the rest took and never looked back.
Please note: Manuka heals from the inside out so no scab will be created and nothing will grow over until the wound is healed properly but nor do you think its healed when its not and pus cannot fester inside a cavity in the wound.
Medical grade Manuka gives you peace of mind if you are worried as it has been sterilised.
Remember Manuka can take on MRSA so you know it has high antibiotic properties ;)
