Not working yet, but still working on it.

I have never been able to get my scanner to work. But I am convinced it is a fine piece of equipment and have not given up. It is recognized by the system, both Linux and Windows XP, but not by the software for scanning. Clearly the usb is getting read with the initial detailed system information, but the scanning software Vuscan and Nkscan on Windows XP or scanimage and xscan? on Linux fail to recognize the scanner. I have taken it apart once to look for mechanical problems and found nothing. I plan to do that again tomorrow. I still am happy with my purchase and think that I will eventually get it to work.

TiVo Needs a Subscription to Work

The TiVo series 2, TCD649080 will get you into using TiVos for a small expense. The hardware alone is useful, even without a subscription. UPDATE -- June 2011 -- Wrong!! TiVo now seems to download something so that YOU CANNOT USE THE HARDWARE WITHOUT A SUBSCRIPTION.. I GUESS THEY CHANGED SOMETHING. WORKAROUND UNKNOWN... SORRY. You can record and playback, record by schedule which you set like a VCR. With a subscription, extra from TiVo the TiVo is much more useful, but you can try it initially with no subscription ... IF the box has been previously set up and has not been reset to require a login with TiVo. With this unit you can also pause and &quot;fast forward&quot; your live TV as it automatically keeps a 30 minute window of the program you are watching. BEWARE... this unit will not take a digital cable directly and will not take a HD signal. Buy series 3 or newer for that.

A good reference book for Python 2.5 and earlier

This is a good book for getting into Python a bit deeper. It isn't a total beginners book but it includes a basic introduction to Python and is a pretty complete reference. Unfortunately Python continues to get improved and this book only covers up to version 2.5. However since the text is older, it is also available used cheaper too. I am very happy I bought this book to add to my library.
