Good Value to Be Found in Samsung's First Watch
1 of 1 found this helpful Though not nearly as advanced as Samsung's latest and greatest, the original Galaxy Gear does cover most of the basics - time, notifications, email, messages, pedometer, timer, stopwatch, etc. As a bonus you also get a marginally useful 1.9m pixel camera. The watch itself is well made and still good looking. It's available in an interesting array of colors, including one with a rose gold finish and off-white watch band.
What really makes this watch a great value, though, is that it can be easily upgraded from its original custom Android OS (the only Samsung watch that used it) to the Tizen OS used on the rest of the Gear line (except for the Gear Live, which used the Android Wear OS.) This free firmware upgrade for all intents and purposes turns the watch into the newer, much more capable Gear 2, which costs nearly twice as much as the Galaxy Gear on the eBay market. Yes, it doesn't have the heart rate monitor, slightly better camera, and slightly better design of the Gear 2, but under the hood, it's the same OS that can run the same apps. As a bonus, on Tizen OS, the watch will run more smoothly and get better battery life.
At present, you can find nice examples in the $50-60 range, making them a very good value indeed, especially once they're running Tizen.

Not worth price
For as little as one cent per screen protector from a Chinese Drop Shipper on E-Bay, I received better protection than from the three dollars spent on ONE Xtreme Guard. Unlike most protectors, this item requires wetting the protector and working it on the LCD screen until it is largely dry. What a hassle. Is it vastly stronger than competing products? Perhaps, but not 300 times stronger. Does it at least come nicely packaged, as shown on the site? Not even. It came in an envelope, where you could almost miss the tiny instruction sheet and plastic envelope holding the screen saver. Definitely not worth the price, when comparable screen savers can be had for next to nothing.
