MEXICO 1838 Zs OM 8 REALES

    1838 Zs OM - Counterfeit
This coin is a rather common variety in lower grades but seldom appears in this high a grade. The coin uses a cap design reminiscent of several Riddell varieties and I believe with enough work a direct linkage will be developed. I see the price as correct - but then again I am a bit crazy when it comes to early Zacatecas counterfeit varieties.

1832 Do RM 8 Reales - Contemporary Circulating Counterfeit
The coin is a very interesting non-Riddell variety - very crudely engraved die. A new design style in my experience. The eagle used on this coin is very similar in appearance to the one used for the Guanajuato mint and it is totally incorrect for the Durango mint which converted to French made dies by that point in time.
MEXICO 1842 8 REALES Scarce Silver Mexican Coin Zacatecas Mint

    1842 Zs OM 8 Reales
The 1842 Zs OM is an example of a Contemporary Circulating Counterfeit. These coins were made and circulated in the US alongside genuine coins in the period before the Civil War at times when coinage was in short supply. Counterfeit 8 Reales were so prevalent in circulation that that in 1845 John L. Riddell the melter and refiner of the New Orleans mint estimated that as many as ten percent of all circulating silver coins were actually counterfeit. The fact that many of the remaining examples are well worn attests to the fact that these coins did circulate as currency. Coin dealers not familiar with the varieties of Mexican coinage often miss identify these debased silver issues as genuine. I have collected counterfeit 8 Reales for over 50 years and I have a large collection of them. They are in my opinion more interesting that the genuine coins. In many if not all cases, the counterfeits are actually scarcer than the genuine coins. In this case, I believe the other bidders were unaware that the coin was not genuine. A genuine 1842 Zs OM in this grade is exceptionally common. Counterfeit examples are far less common and usually bring higher prices. This is exactly the kind of counterfeit (one made over 150 years ago) that is legal to own and presents NO danger to the collecting community as a whole. eBay should allow this type of coin to be properly described and sold.
