An excellent compilation of traditional Apache songs sung by some of the best Apache singers.
This CD contains an excellent compilation of traditional Apache songs that are sung for various purposes. Philip Cassadore was for many years highly respected for his singing ability and knowledge of traditional songs. His fame extended both on and off the Apache reservations (White Mountain, San Carlos, Yavapai ect.). He had sung in many important ceremonies and thus had to sing those songs correctly for them to work in their proper manner. Patsy Cassadore was also a very accomplished singer of traditional Apache songs. She too was highly respected for her abilities. Many Apache songs are very complicated in their construction. It takes a long time and requires the attendance at many gatherings to learn these songs. Some have been passed down through many generations and their origins are long forgotten. They are not ever written down and are learned by a lot of exposer, practice and dedication. Being able to speak the Chiricahua and Western Apache languages and singing songs in sweats and ceremonies, I can speak first hand as to the excellence of the material on this CD. The recordings are amazingly clear and beautifully produced. Canyon Records has always been top tier on collecting and producing native recording material. This CD will allow the listener to gain a small but good sampling of traditional Apache songs, sung by some of the best Apache singers (all the people on these recordings) and recorded in and out of the studio by one the finest companies. If you are an Apache who grew up around these songs, then you will of course recognize the singers, the songs and be happy to hear them sung again! Thank you to all of the singers, their relatives and to all who were involved in these recordings.
