I also had to purchase the obd2 (20 pin) to bmw 16 pin for my "older" e39. The INPA program worked with windows xp to connect after the slightly complex install. The instructions in Adobe reader helped.

works fine
It is light, seems like a cheaper piece, and the connection isn't snug but it stayed connected the entire time and performed the job.
