Alot of value for the money!
2 of 2 found this helpful My first DSLR was a Canon Eos XS. Before that,I had a Fuji S5700.
After a year, I missed having video capability...time to upgrade. After ALOT of research, I decided to go Nikon with the D3100. I've only had it a month and there's a learning curve between the brands, so still figuring it out. Here's my take on the switch so far;
* Size/weight & build quality...Nikon is more compact and has more of a quality feel to it.
* Picture quality...Nikon is only slightly better. It's higher MP count may be more visible in large prints, haven't printed more than 5x7's yet. Also could be the lens. Canon lenses are rated very well. Both brands use the 18-55mm. Canon has (Image Stabilization/IS), Nikon calls it (Vibration Reduction/VR).
This feature was more noticeable with the Canon Lenses,(I also had a Canon 55-250mm IS). Especially in "Live View" mode.
* Ease of use...Out-of-the-box, the Canon was easier to learn. I do like their menu format. Nikon has alot more buttons, which intimidates some people. Having designated buttons is nice. You don't have to scroll through menus to get to many features/settings. I also like the animated apeture/shutter speed settings. The Nikon may take a little getting used to, but I like it.
* Price/Value...got mine for $479./new with lens, case and SD card. I'm very happy with the purchase. You can't beat this package for under $500.
* Summary...some will knock ANY cam in the "economy/entry-level dslr" category. I chock that up to some folks being "equipment snobs".
I'm not a professional, just a photog enthusiast. I can't afford dropping thousands on cam gear. For me, this is the ticket. I shoot in manual mode 98% of the time, but its great to be able to set it full-auto and hand it over to anyone. All with very nice results.
If you're getting into dslr's and considering the D3100...you won't be sorry.

Can't beat it at this price
Bought for Stevens 320 field w/ ribbed barrel. Hard to find. Only other (quality) choice was over $100. Quality, fit and price on this was excellent...very happy with purchase.

Not a fan of this cam..
Bought this cam based on good reviews, my experience was much different. Unless in manual mode, it was difficult to get any good, clear pictures. Macro mode provided excellent close-up shots. That seemed to be all this cam was good for. Any movement, distant subjects or low-light conditions consistently produced out-of-focus pictures.
