Don't assume it’s defective if it doesn't initially work as expected.
This is a good product that works as advertised. However, I wouldn’t have said that when I first installed it in my 65 year old home. After replacing my worn-out original chime with this unit, I was disappointed when instead of hearing a crisp “ding-dong” I was instead greeted with a faint “tick-dong.” Long story short, my old 16 VAC transformer (which measured 16.45 VAC no-load) wasn’t able to deliver enough current to adequately drive the Broan chime. I replaced the old transformer with a new one from Home Depot and it now works perfectly, producing good volume and a pleasant tone. The replacement transformer I used is a Hampton Bay Model HB-122-03, rated 16VAC, 10VA. Cost is $15.98 + tax. Hope that helps!
