Solid, Satisfying and Beautifully Sublime At Times
Fantastic! I've been a fan of Rita Coolidge since the Mad Dogs & Englishmen days. I hadn't heard the first album on this CD ('Rita Coolidge') since the early 70's when I owned the LP. I didn't even remember what it sounded like since it's been so long -- I just remembered that I had always liked it. So when I saw that it was now bundled with her 2nd album ('Nice Feelin'') onto one CD at a reasonable price, it was a no-brainer for me to check it out. I had never heard 'Nice Feelin'" before. It is so good that I might like it just slightly better than the first album.
Rita's voice is full, thick and smooth -- reminds me of milk and honey somehow. She uses her wide vibrato to wonderful effect. I especially like the way she just sings the songs without much embellishment, unlike so many popular singers today who are all about showing off their vocal chops with unnecessary ornamentation. Rita just lets her sublime voice and the great songs she is singing carry the day without the pyrotechnical posturing. It is extremely effective.
Several of the songs on this CD have a very peaceful, calming energy to them such as my favorite, the hauntingly beautiful 'Seven Bridges Road', as well as 'Second Story Window', 'Nice Feelin'', 'I Believe in You', 'Better Days' and 'Lay My Burden Down'. In fact, I like the mellower stuff on this CD more than the more uptempo, rockin' stuff. Although there is not a bad song or performance on either of the two LPs, I didn't like the Stax & Motown cover tunes as much as I like the other tunes. These performances (Marvin Gaye's 'Ain't It Peculiar', Otis Redding's 'Happy Song', William Bell's 'Born Under A Bad Sign') are strong. But for me the other material is stronger. I actually wanted to rate this CD 4-1/2 stars, but ebay wouldn't let me. It deserves 5 stars more than it deserves 4, so....
I haven't heard any other Rita Coolidge albums and I'd like to if there are any as good as these two. Can anyone recommendation any of her other albums for those of us who really like these two? [This is an edited version of my review on Amazon]
