Munchhausan
0 of 1 found this helpful This is a rare little seen movie, made during WW2 literally as the Nutzie regime was beginning to collapse but was still made somehow at great costs. Nutzie attempts to say "all is well" aside. This is perhaps the very first attempt to make a movie based on the very real character of Baron Munchhausan and his tall tales of fantasy. The cinematography is great, the costumes are wonderful and the special effects for 1943 are wonderfully clever, but the story and pacing is slow and plodding and you get the feeling that everyone involved in this was watching over their shoulders worried that the Gestapo was going to pull the plug on the whole process at any moment. This is definitely worth seeing, but I would much rather watch Terry Gilliam's far far superior "Adventures of Baron Munchhausan"

Best DVD version of a great Hammer sci fi horror flick
2 of 2 found this helpful This movie scared the bejeezuz out of me as a kid, this original Hammer DVD release version of this film is by far the best quality, I have had the VHS version for years but the DVD burns that have been most commonly available in this country have had sound quality issues where something got lost in the copying. Its a real tragady this movie hasn't been reissued as it is by far one of the best Hammer sci fi horror films of this era, it takes the BBC TV version from the early 60's tightens and updates the original story with much better special effects, the insect creatures are far more menacing here, and the premise is still interesting on many levels. The final climactic scene is far more dramatic than in the TV Version. It it still suffers from the usual low budget that hampered most Hammer films but its a major step up from the BBC TV version. Defiently one of my top 10 sci fi horror flicks still to this day.
