Thought-provoking, academic approach
A thought-provoking, informative history, with much relevance to today (see Donald Trump). The only downside is that it's a thoroughly academic approach, and slightly dry. But the content and research outweigh the poor academic writing. (And why is it that academics insist on using multisyllabic words? It's an ongoing debate between academia and public history.)

First book by America's greatest historian
Before there was the multivolume biography of Lyndon Johnson, Robert Caro wrote The Power Broker. If you want to know why American cities look the way they do, or just read a thrilling bio, this is the book. Behind his avility as a historian, Caro is simply America's best nonfiction writer. Ever.
