Beethoven Quartet : Shostakovich: String Quartet Nos. 7, 8, CD
May 07, 2019
Musically and Historically Significant
These are classic recordings by Shostakovich's chosen premier performers for his quartets, perhaps stronger on drama than tonal beauty. The dark, difficult 15th receives a performance that has yet to be much improved upon. The 7th and 8th quartets, recorded in 1961 are in mono, while the 15th recorded in 1975, is in stereo. (This is the same recording available on Melodiya. It is apparently also the same recording that has appeared on Praga, presented in mono and identified as a later live performance!) Recorded sound is decent throughout, rather reverberant in the mono recordings. There is, incidentally, a mistake on the back card. Sergei Shirinsky is listed as the cellist for all three recordings, but he passed away during the 1974 rehearsals for the 15th Quartet and was subsequent replaced by Yevgeny Altman. The 7th and 8th Quartets were recorded while the Beethoven Quartet still had all its original members.

Another Fine Nelsons/BSO Shostakovich Release
Stirring performance of the "Leningrad" and a stark, powerful performance of the 6th. Recorded sound is fine. Another success in this series.

I bought the DVD set for the supplement disc, which includes the short "Quinoa", not included on the Blu-ray set. There are also interviews and over an hour of outtakes, among other things. The film itself is, in my opinion, the most interesting thing David Lynch has done since "Eraserhead". It's a mind-bending journey into alternate realities that throws conventional narrative in the wastebin and so is definitely not for everyone. It would look better in Blu-ray, but I wanted that short.
