Crucial Tool for Fixie Folks
Shimano tools are a little pricey but that is often the case for shop tools. While other companies make decent chain whips I like the fact this Shimano chainwhip is more than twice the thickness of other brands. This makes the tool far less likely to warp or break under the great force needed--and I'm talking over 45 Nm-- to properly secure the rear sprockets on track bikes. I've build more than 100 track bikes this summer alone and virtually all of them had relatively loose sprockets with little or no grease.
The rubber coating on the handle is a great feature when it comes to applying the force necessary to secure the sprockets to the rear wheel. If you are going to be applying over 45 Nm to a lock ring you need a comfortable handle. Another big plus is you can tighten the sprocket and the lock ring without having to flip the tool around.
The only gripes I have is mainly the price of the tool and chain replacement. Unless you plan on changing gears relatively frequently this tool may not be for you. The chain on this tool has been known to need replacing but this is a simple fix. However I have not needed to replaced the chain in well over a hundred uses.
The bottom line is that this really is a shop tool and if you are buying it for personal use you may not find it to be worth the price. This is a sturdy tool that serves its purpose well.
