Sony Vaio VPC-F115FM Review & Modifications!!
Pros: Keyboard + backlit. Full HD resolution screen w/ HDMI video out. Blu-ray player. Powered eSata port.
Cons: Cheap feeling DVD tray. 5400 rpm hard drive (see my mods below). Whining noise thru mic port (see mods below). Lots of plastic. Lack of docking station support (must find a universal).
Summary: I love this computer, but out of the box I suggest making the following mods to get the best performance:
MODS:
#1 - Upgrade to a solid state HDD. I bought a OCZ Vertex 2 SATA II 2.5" SSD 120GB model. I can boot Windows 7 Home Premium (with other software) fully in 15 seconds! Then what to do about the OEM hard drive?
#2 - Put the original HDD in an eSATA enclosure. I purchased a DeLOCK Enclosure #42465 ESATA/USB Combo. It included a high quality eSATAp Cable. This setup gets all of it's power from the eSata port - so no additional cords or power supplies!
#3 - Fix the whining noise!!!! The problem is the mic port is picking up noise from the internals. To fix it, follow these steps:
- Click Start ControlPanel Hardware and Sound Sound, to open the sound options dialog
- Click the Recording tab
- Select the Microphone and click Properties to open Microphone properties dialog
- Click Listen tab
- Check the box for "Listen to this device"
- Select "Digital Output(Optical)..." option under the "Playback through this device"
This will cause anything plugged in to the microphone port (front-left of chassis) to route to the the digital output port (next to mic port). Your internal microphone will still work, but you won't be able to use an external microphone in the port. This is not an issue for me because if I need an external microphone, I can use one that has a USB interface which is common.

This brand is the OEM part. There are a lot of knockoffs of this pump that are a fraction of the price. Don t fall for them. Get the original German part and it will last.
