Classic Jazz with 2 favorites
This disc features, in addition to Sonny Rollins (a long time fave of mine) & Max Roach, Ray Bryant, a pianist I think is underrated. He's played with pretty much every well-known jazz musician in the last half of the 20th century, but also has solo albums I love. His signature style, heavy on the left hand, is unusual and gives the piano a fuller (more multi-instrument?) sound with a strong bass line. Hard to describe --just hear him!
Anyway, this is more Sonny's album, so Ray's style is not so evident, but listening to it is a total joy and it's become an immediate fave in our household.

Jay Clayton a unique vocalist, still cutting edge after decades performing
We both love Jay Clayton & I've been trying to collect all her available recordings, so was very happy to see this recent release.
It doesn't disappoint. Clayton sings like no one else, even when she's doing standards, and her use of her voice as an instrument is unique and unmistakable.
If you have a chance to acquire this disc, take it! Clayton's fan club is passionate but not large, and her recordings are never produced in huge numbers, it's best to get them when you can. You won't regret it.

FINALLY more Lawrence Hammond!
Love Lawrence Hammond, used to hear him at Freight & Salvage in Berkeley back in the day, but he made only one record, then went off to med school & devoted himself to saving lives. The discovery of these tapes does my heart good -- more of the songs we love plus some new ones (warning: couple of real tear-jerkers in here too). He's a fabulous poet, story-teller, musician, composer, with a voice to do all that justice.
