Best running Challenger ever
The L
HO scale Lionel Challenger is the most solidly built, and best running Challenger produced the last 20 years. The DCC decoder could be updated, and the headlight could be brighter, but i prefer this lugger before many of the newer versions by contemporary manufactures. I run 40-60 car Trains doubleheaded up 1,5 % grades and 42" minimum radius curves (I model Cheyenne to Laramie in the year 1948) I have about 30 Challenger locomotives, about halv of them by Lionel, and they are always my first choice.

Beautifull model with very poor running characteristics
1 of 1 found this helpful The BLI Challenger is a great looking model. It comes in a fine box, well polstered for shipping all the way to Norway. Tender and locomotiv are already coupled. Sound is not excellent but good enough. Smoke is fantastic. All wheels were in gauge and lateral axel motion normal.
Its a shame that electrical pickup is so faulty. It stops and hesitates every few feet at random places, on curves and straight track, om my layout.
For the record: I bought 2 of them: 3942 and 3954. Both display the same characteristics.
As for my layout : there are no grades, 24" minimum radius (which it negotiated without a problem), track cleaning is continous. System 1 DCC,
I run a number of other locomotives without any pickup problem.
I own more than 20 Challenger locomotives from various manufacturers (also brass), I have been in the hobby off and (mostly) on for 55 years, and to a lot of tinkering on my own an others locos.
I have respect for BLI and the fine models they create (i have several of them), but the Challenger has been a big disapointment and I will be returning them. At this price we should expect something better.

Fine sound, good looks, but should have a "Sweeney" smoke stack, Wheels dirty but in gauge, coupler heights in gauge. Could use a little more weight as it is prone to derailment when backing up in 24" curves. No backup light on tender. I have 2 of them and overall very satesfied,
