    Introductory Primer for the Uninitiated
This is a nice introduction to XTC for the interested listener. Most of the major hits are here but there's nothing rare or unusual about the collection. Not to mention, you won't get anything from Apple Venus or Wasp Star. If you become addicted to XTC's particular brand of pop, rock and innovation, then the individual albums are essential listening. I am particular to the middle through late period albums as I prefer the more mature songwriting of Partridge and Moulding rather than the raw exuberance of the early years. English Settlement is a nice transition album if you want to get a feel of both early and later period XTC in one fell swoop. Otherwise, grab Skylarking if you must have the one "essential" album.

    Uniquely Peter Gabriel
There is no question that Peter Gabriel stretches the boundaries of musical innovation and yet he remains eminently listenable. This album is no different. His interpretation of various classic and not-so-classic songs pushes the boundaries of the various song structures and for the most part is successful. This is challenging music, not for the emotionally fragile. If you want froth, go find Britney Spears. To understand the complexity of Gabriel's interpretation, listen first to the original songs by the artists. Then indulge in the discs. "Heroes", "The Boy in the Bubble", "Listening Wind", "The Power of Your Heart", "The Book of Love", "My Body is a Cage", and "Flume" - these are simply magnificent. The rest are at least interesting with the exception of "Street Spirit" which is too methodical. Peter's voice simply can't sustain the notes like it used to at that meter and in that range. Buy the album and if you can go to a concert. Back in 2002, I took my wife and she is not a Gabriel fan. When she left, she was amazed at the craftsmanship and artistry of the show. Now that I have played "The Power of Your Heart" for her, she's almost a fan :) On the other hand, Lou Reed's reciprocal cover of "Solsbury Hill" is brutal. I appreciate Reed's songwriting and influence but this version was painful and unlistenable.
