The Hollow Hills by Mary Stewart
This is the second in a series of three books that uses Arthurian Legend to tell the life story of Merlin. Merlin is known as: The Enchanter, The Prophet, Magician, Advisor to Kings, a mythical figure of King Arthur's time. This book picks right up where the first book, The Crystal Cave, leaves off. It tells of Merlin’s life from just before Arthur’s birth, until the famous Sword incident that demonstrates that Arthur is the right choice to be King of all England. Merlin's part in the overall Arthurian story is told in this book along with the other two books of this series, The Crystal Cave and The Last Enchantment. Even though this book is part of a series, it still stands on its own. All three books are masterfully written and very entertaining.

Tai-Pan by James Clavell
Tai-Pan starts its story in 1841 with the founding of Hong Kong. The main character Dirk Struan, otherwise known as Tai-Pan, is a China Trader and head of The Noble House, the leading trading company in the orient at that time. Based on real history, it tells a very exciting and interesting tale of the cut-throat competition between the China Traders at that time. They put everything on the line each trading season. They smuggle opium, trade in tea, silks, and anything else that can show a profit. The main rival of Dirk Struan is Tyler Brock, an obsessed man that would do absolutely anything to bring down the Noble House. The book is full of interesting characters, suach as: May May, Struan's Chinese mistress, a collection of China Traders, the Govenor, Military and Naval men, and a host of others. This book is part of a series of historically based fiction books that compliment each other to form a sort of larger story over a very wide time frame. Shogun, Noble House, King Rat, Whirlwind, and Gai-Jin are the other books that complete James Clavell's Asian Saga.

Rumpole a La Carte by John Clifford Mortimer
Here’s a collection of six Rumpole tales in one volume. It starts off with Rumpole a la Carte where Rumpole defends a famous chef, when a live mouse is served up with a dinner. Rumpole and the Summer of Discontent takes place during a time when everyone everywhere, is seemingly ready to go on strike. In Rumpole and the Right to Silence, the case is complicated by a secret society. In Rumpole at Sea, Hilda gets Rumpole to sea to give him a break from his bad streak of luck at court, only to find Rumpole confined on board with the dreaded Judge Graves, who is also on vacation. In Rumpole and the Quacks, the side stories are just as interesting as Rumpole’s defense of a doctor, who (in the end) seems able to handle things himself. We get a very unusual look at Rumpole on the other side of the fence, when Rumpole prosecutes, in Rumpole for the Prosecution. This book is a delightful mixture of Rumpole tales that any Rumpole fan would enjoy!
