The Voice of Establishment Writes On Establishment Shenanigans, Again!.
I wish this man had broken out of "reporter" stance and had put his speculations about what all this means! We ALL have to guess; why not join with his audience, let his hair down, and state how he sees these trends being countered or blunted by us, still the citizens of our paper democracy?
This is an accurately drawn, careful book. I'm left wondering, though, if the writer himself isn't so stuck in his income-stream New York City peer group perspective that he can't imagine intelligent life. New Yorkers do take themselves quite "for granted" as leading-edge thinkers, thus they dismiss outlooks that don't buy into the rat-race they've already run to get where they are (which must be ON TOP.) This smug outlook thus smothers meaningful dialogue. I read this sort of work for the facts, as a reference, but not as a springboard for finding alternatives. For those, I look more to people like Dylan Ratigan, with his hydroponic-VA ventures in keeping the world where we really do live sustainable for lives, lives vigilant & aware, but still capable of side-stepping the rushing folly of too much testosterone dependence while drawing our own vitality from faith, cooperation and joyful respect for the divine beings we behold in the eyes of each other. There are quite smart, capable people who aren't motivated at all to prove this in order to help lost souls get out. Mr. Risen, why not get naked and walk in the woods,find the leadership groups, Mr. Radigan, among others who consider what's being outdistanced by hope and hard work.

Best good journalism read of 2014!
If you are a Naomi Klein reader, James Meek's Private Island will be a great aid to grasping the truly global scope of Corporatocracy's Grip upon this little planet and all that dwells thereon. Mr. Meek, known to me previously more as a topical novelist of skill and perception, brings his lucid prose style to bear upon "stuff" many of us may habitually skip over in the news: What does "privatize" mean? What does it do, in practical terms, to systems we all can't live without? If I sound a bit "out there," think a minute: We're speaking of water. of electricity, roads, rails and ports, the post and telephonic grids, of medicine and land-use, including who lives where.
The upshot: If it is PRIVATE, it isn't owned by us!
While Meek doesn't pose conclusions, I found reflection irresistible: Have we become retainers, slaves and vassals? Or, in reaction, shall we become highway-persons, pirates, smugglers, swindlers or con-artists, surviving on the margins? If not these bleak alternatives, what then? I'm left with my conclusion: Those of us who value liberty and self-respect, had best now cease to delegate authority and make our plans, separately or together, to triumph in the end!
