Feel My Pain - Battlezone (CD 1998) [IMPORT, England]
Paul DiAnno is so underrated when it comes to his own projects. His name has become synonomous with heavy metal. It is long overdue to recognize this guy for his own achievements and do away with the "Ex-Maiden" image. Let the claim to fame be what this man has to bring on his own terms. "Feel My Pain" though released under the Battlezone name - shares a lot of the traditional style and quality that DiAnno has displayed in Killers and also in his solo efforts. Paul himself feels that when you are in a band for any lengthy period of time - soon then all the politics start to take over. "As a solo artist you can pretty much do whatever you want." The sound here on this album is authentic in terms of it's true to form ball busting attitude that DiAnno strives to present. It is well produced, great lead guitars no matter who is playing - this line up happens to be completely different than the Battlezone days with Steve Hopgood (Who also later played in Killers). Just as heavy if not heavier with the one continual member in Johnny " Bravo" Wiggins on guitar. In addition to Wiggins on the stringsis Paulo Turin, Colin Riggs on Bass and replacing Hopgood on drums is Mark Angel. Why Eva is the Diva!!
What I love about this particular effort by Eva O is that it's the kind of music that just grows on you. When I first heard this record back in 1994 when it was released I was dissappointed in it's lighter approach being used to the heaviness that her first band the Superheroines had. At the time I knew nothing about the Shadow Project because information about Eva was hard to come by. So my critique here is primarily based on what I know of Eva herself and the music, poetry, and sounds that she creates.
The work she had done on the "Past Time" record was a compilation tribute to all the work she had done with the SH, Christian Death and some early version of the Superheroines then known as the Speed Queens. Plus there was some very interesting, experimental tunes that Eva did solo. This is where I see there being 2 sides to Eva O's musical genius. She has this very warped side to her that rides primarily on the poetry in the song. The music sounds like Eva recorded it while being in a loony Bin or on serious drugs. "Backsliding" is a great example of this. But the poetry and message is stellar and thats what gets you hooked into what she does.
Now enter into "Demons Fall for an Angels Kiss". Including some tracks that she had done with The Superheroines- Children of the Light and Souls that Save, The whole album varies in tempo and demands more of a study than just a casual listen. The more I played this disc, the more I wanted to hear it again and to this day find some warm and calming effect that it has on me whenever I am mad or upset or perhaps emotional over anything. The words here are very inspirational and invite a peaceful side of yourself. The music is structured so that you don't lose that heavy edge feel, but are able to sit and enjoy the music that is here. Eva proves her guitar excellence on this album. She is highly under rated in that category, not to mention having the most awesome guitar I have ever seen hands down!!! - Her Cherub Angel that she herself designed. But this record ranges from upbeat lighter sounding goth rhythms to absolute thro down heavy power in sound. Every song is different from the other. No 2 songs sound the same. I love the poetry she speaks on this album. She comes up with such quotable quotes such as "Accept Life, not Life Accepts", "Don't suck the lifeless, they're already dead" (Past Time) or "Wings that are torn, Battle no more", "Beware of the Fallen for they wish to be you. You could wind up empty". (Demons Fall) She says things that just make you think. My favourite songs on "Demons Fall" are Day Dreamer, Angel of Earth/Angel of Fire, "Take a Jesus", "Universal Trip", and "Unveil". These tunes display Eva's musical ability the best on this record. It marks a significant era in Eva's lifetime too as it was done back when her beloved husband Rozz Williams was still alive. Though seperated at the time - the 2 connected with eachother almost daily. And when you listen to this record that includes the efforts of Shadow Project Keyboardist - Paris, and then knowing just how special to Eva Rozz was - you can appreciate where her musical direction is heralding from. One other note is that Eva really pushed a very Christian ethic with this album, significant after so many years doing death rock songs in the Superheroines, hence "NightStalker", a song surrounding her relationship with serial killer Richard Ramirez. Well worth getting. This is my 2nd copy - the other wore out!!
