I have tried to get the handle grip down...

I have tried to get the handle grip down all the way into the connecting pole, but can't get it to fit all the way down. Hopefully, that won't matter. When I plugged it in to let it charge for 7 hours, the light came on, but an hour later, it went off. My old Shark's charging light stayed on as long as it was plugged in. I didn't know if this one is supposed to stay lit or if there's a problem with the unit. I unplugged & plugged it in 4x, but the light always went off in an hour or so. .
