great 1080p movies, great DVD upconversion, affordable!
I bought this player because I wanted 1080P capability with the cheaper HD DVD format until the Sony Blu Ray S550 player comes out. My main reason however was to have good upcoversion of my standard definition DVD players. I have an older Oppo upconverting DVD player and the Toshiba A30 beats it hands down. My Standard DVD's look better than they ever have previously. I own a Mitsubishi WD73833 and 1080p content looks amazing on this player. To get true 1080p output you need the Toshiba A30 or the A35. The cheaper A1's, A2's and A3's only output 1080i. I upgraded the firmware to the latest version of 3.0 and I have had no issues playing movies in the "Up to 1080p/24 fps" setting. I did have to have this setting set to auto because otherwise if I set it to force 1080p/24 fps my TV wouldnt display a signal. My TV supports 1080/24fps but for some reason it wouldnt display and to be honest since this player will be my secondary player along with a Blu Ray player I am not going to spend a lot of time trying to figure out why. If you dont have a budget for an HDDVD player I would get the A35 as it is improved over the A30 especially with the audio capabilities. I think with the latest firmware the A30's shortcomings when it was first released have been resolved. Currently as of this date the A35's are going for too much money given the format doesnt have a future and that is why I went with the A30. I am currently building my home theater area so I didnt have my entertainment completely setup so I cant tell you how the audio sound coming from this player. If you have a desire to watch 1080p content, have great upconversion of your standard DVD's and dont want to buy a Blu Ray player just yet. You cant go wrong with this player at the price is currently listing for here on Ebay.
