Thrilled to have my own physical copy of this film masterpiece
This particular version with Alex Kingston is one of my top favorite movies, but I've been going to Youtube to watch a free copy. Someone uploaded a poor quality of it to that website. I decided not to count on it always being available over there, so I bought myself this gift. It's a beautiful DVD from outside and inside (of course). Only thing that's missing is the Masterpiece Theatre introduction that is available in the Youtube version. It gives a solid sense of the sophistication and seriousness of the subject matter, and gives important background: written by Daniel Defoe, a great journalist in his day, who had himself spent some time in the prison system and was particularly interested in the women criminals that were produced by the societal and cultural system. He was interested in what led them to becoming such (which is a great mark of empathy and sharp intellect). This is a work of high quality and is recommended to all women, but those that have lived a sheltered life may find it too harsh. I showed this to one such friend (she had Autism and was very sheltered), and she was so upset at the end that she wept and wept. I felt horrible.
So, in conclusion, this is very important subject matter, but sensitivity is needed when deciding whom to share it with.
