A high quality camera made before planned obsolescence. Wonderful.
2 of 2 found this helpful If you're looking for the latest/greatest MEGA pixel camera this is not for you. If you're looking for a quality DSLR that takes fantastic pictures then, jackpot! It is heavy - I like to think this is because it was made to last and 'made when expense wasn't an issue' according to an Olympus rep. He lamented the fact that they don't make them anymore. I find it easy to operate and full of features to get me the picture I want. If I could make any improvements it would be to the memory it takes - CF and SF cards under 1 to 2 GB (have to confirm the 2GB/never tried one, but read someone else had) which means you need a lot of cards if you are on a high compression ratio. More pixels? Maybe. I've never tried to enlarge a photo in a big way from a more typical compression ratio, so it might be an issue. When I bought my first Olympus Camedia E10 I looked at Consumer Reports and it got a very high rating; I believe (if I remember correctly) that the Canon Rebel(?) of the time was the leading competitor and has consistently been well rated - but this Olympus was the cream of the crop. My first one was a used camera as well and belonged to a professional photographer. I am suspicious that is the reason I eventually had trouble with the power to the camera; the constant changing of batteries and hooking up to AC he would have done would have been exponentially greater than your average use. Otherwise, not a problem to be had. It's pictures always get the ooo's and aaah's.

The camera for macro/close-ups
When it comes to point and shoot cameras I find there's little difference these days between quality in the better brands. What this camera DOES have that some others don't is the ability to get fabulous macro shots. The focal length is wonderful - you can practically touch the subject with the lens (not really, of course) when taking a shot. Since I'm photographing a lot of insect life that makes this camera a stand out amongst so many others.
It has some drawbacks, but again, they are common to all these little point and shoot types. Sometimes it won't focus on the tiny object you want it to because the camera 'sees' another object as the target - the color representation can be poor under different types of light other than natural - little buttons make any fast changes to the shot setup difficult. Battery is proprietary and the charger is a bit of a pain to get the battery seated, but I'll put up with it for all the other pluses - it's a minor annoyance.
Otherwise, great clarity, a very nice zoom, terrific macro and good battery life. I'm very pleased with its' performance and purchased a second one for a family member.
