I trust these AKG-712's for mixing.
I've owned a lot of studio headphones over the years, and ever though you get to know their strengths and weaknesses, I can finally mix my tracks without having to remember that the bass is bumped on one pair, or to check the mids on another.
The AKG 712's are open back, meaning you don't want to used them while recording with mics in the room. Just cup a hand over your ear, and get that "hear the ocean in a seashell effect" and you'll understand why closed backed headphones can colour the sound, unlike these.
Closed backed phones are necessary for tracking and DJing, but not well suited to balancing elements in a mix.
These AKG-712's are light and comfortable. Their impedance is such that the overall volume, even with something like a USB powered Focusrite 2i4, is more than enough. They are loud with the headphone knob set at the 2 o'clock position.
I still check my mixes with my monitors, but since I started using these headphones, my mixes are 97% of the way there using the AKGs. If you get a good mix on these, they will sound great on any system.
