bluetooth works, airdropping between 2011 macbook and iphone X doesn't.

While the bluetooth works fine, I'm sure, but after trying now off and on for a year, it can't make an Early 2011 Macbook Pro 13" to work with airdrop between iphone and the macbook. Apparently it can only airdrop with other macbooks. Not much use for me. Tried various fixes and suggestions from people, but they all seem to lead to the same result: You'll need a 2012 or newer macbook to have it airdrop with an iphone.
