As a numismatist since I was 10 years old, Indian head cents are a sentimental favorite of mine. The early years are not so rare as to make the values out of reach for young collectors. The 1859 was the introduction year for the Indian Cent design. It is unique as the reverse design was only made for the first year of the Indian Cent mintage. This coin is reasonably valued since mintage was reported as over 36 million. Contrast that with the pennies of Sacramento of 1908 and 1909. In 1908, Sacramento only produced about 1.1 million pennies, and the collector's value is much higher than the 1859, based solely on it's scarcity. This is more extreme in the case of the 1909-S Indian Cent where only about 300 thousand were minted. So the pleasing design of a 150 year old penny in very good to excellent condition can be enjoyed with only a modest investment.
