Chicken Skin Music
Ry Cooder: not only the finest slide player alive but also one of the most honest and genuine musicians ever to pick up the guitar: no hype, no pose, no bull, just beautiful guitar tone, extraordinarily tasteful playing and an insatiable curiosity about traditional forms of music made for, and by, the people. i.e. folk musics from Mexico to Hawaii. Every album yields up gems and this is no exception. Working with musicians chosen from the cream of their particular genre, they explore common musical ground on a bunch of titles, some of which are already well-known in different contexts.
It presents a large entourage of musicians playing a wide variety of instruments in a range of rhythms from straight back beat to bolero. Check out Smack Dab In The Middle, Always Lift Him Up, and the gorgeous version of Stand By Me. Just the sound of Cooder's guitar is almost enough to move one to tears; his sensitivity, his mastery of colour, tone and nuance and his instinctive sense of syncopation are always a delight. There are rockier albums (Bop Till You Drop, The Slide Area)and more esoteric ones (Jazz, Boomer's Story) let alone his well-known film soundtracks (Long Riders, Paris,Texas) but this is bang in the middle of his fond flirtation with Tex-Mex forms and is very representative of his ouevre. Perhaps, I find the choice of titles like He'll Have To Go, Yellow Roses and Goodnight Irene a little close to cornball, but somehow Cooder always brings something fresh to anything he tackles. For me, a more even album would be Borderline or Into The Purple Valley, but hey! we're criticising someone here who can trade licks with the very best of the rest and can rock the socks off you, as evidenced by his gig at the Hammersmith Odeon touring the Bop Till You Drop album: moving, masterful and thrilling.
Get Chicken Skin Music as part of a Cooder collection if you care about real music made by real musicians for people with ears and hearts and feet to tap and hands to drum on the table-top!

Why pay more?
Great value guitar stand. Does the job. Robust enough if treated with respect.

OK for an inexpensive slap-back, but limited in use.
2 of 2 found this helpful Fast repeat OK but limited with a max. 300ms repeat rate. For another £10 I replaced it with a TC Prophet with up to 1200ms delay.
