Excellent no-frills camcorder with built-in light and quality lens.
This is the second one I've bought (both in used condition), so I obviously think it is a good camcorder. Both were presents for my dad (I have a Sony TRV-33, which is miles better than the VP-D20, but cost me £550 brand new). My dad travels to India every year and wanted a camcorder that would be a no nonsense reliable machine. The first VP-D20 I gave him performed very well and lasted two years. Unfortunately it developed a loose tape chassis which my dad (in his ignorance) decided to try to superglue back into position. He then gave it to me to fix. The chassis was relatively easy to fix, by tightening the three screws holding the chassis in (although you have to take the camcorder apart a bit to do this). It took me another two hours to clear and free the superglued parts so that it would work correctly again. I decided to get an identical replacement for him rather than give him the repaired one back because I couldn't be sure my repair would keep the camcorder running while he is in India. Two main factors for buying the exact same camcorder are that it is an easy to use camcorder (he is over 75 years so it needs to be!) and it has a built-in lamp at the front which is very useful, especially in India because it gets dark very early in the evening. Other Pros: All buttons are nice and big and clearly labelled so are easy to operate. The camcorder is surprisingly light for it's size. Infra-red remote control. Fire-Wire output. Excellent quality lens. Cons: Grey-scale eye viewfinder - not a big problem since it is always easier to use the big colour LCD flip screen. The viewfinder is only useful if you want to save battery power. The LCD flip-screen is not touch control (I am spoilt by my TRV-33) and access to the menu is via two buttons and a rotating scroll wheel. These are quite easy to operate without having to take your eyes off the LCD screen. Not many extra features such as multiple fade etc. but I rarely use the special features on my TRV-33. It has the ability to take photos but these are stored on the tape because there is no option for a memory card. All-in-all, this is a great no-frills camcorder to take on holiday etc.

    QDI Advance 10T Motherboard
The QDI Advance 10T was released in 2001 and was specifically aimed at overclockers. The processor clock multiplier can be configured from x4.5 to x16. It supports all socket 370 processors including the tualatin pentium III & celeron. CPU core voltage is also user configurable, as is the front side bus (66, 100 or 133). The ATX motherboard has a 4x AGP slot as well as 5 PCI slots and even 1 16-bit ISA slot. There is on-board sound with Soundblaster compatibility. Two serial ports are provided but no on-board graphics, which is a good thing, because the on-board graphics on most boards at that time were lousy. The board supports up to 3 SDRAM memory cards, single or double sided, up to 1.5GB of RAM. The software that was originally supplied with the board allowed the CPU to be overclocked directly from within Windows. Definitely one of the best socket 370 boards available at the time. Unfortunately, the whole Advance 10 series suffers from a long term reliability issue. The capacitors used to supply power to the CPU and memory were not of as high a quality as you might expect from QDI. These high capacity electrolytic capacitors dry out and lose their ability to hold charge, thus resulting in a non-functioning board. However, it is fairly simple to replace these capacitors (assuming you can handle a soldering iron) and restore the board to full working order for about £5. These boards are great for experimenting with overclocking, especially if you can find the original software and you have some old socket 370 processors you don't mind damaging!
