A deep and thorough exploration of the man who created a mountain.
This is a really great biography that delves into the motivation for writing the stories that are so magnificent and memorable.
Patrick O'Brian was a complicated man who changed his name and tried to obliterate his past by inventing a new identity. He clung to this identity at the cost of honesty, certainly and at what personal cost we won't know from this biography. He rejected his brothers and his father who was severe and unforthcoming. Out of this came Patrick's search through writing for some kind of integration of this wound with the male figures in his life. He created one of the greatest friendships between two men that there is in literature. He showed the subtleties of humour, the ebb and flow of a deep love between two men.
Success did not drop into his lap and his wonderful books were long rejected but he carried on. Finally he received some recognition but not as much as he deserved. He was a diligent and hard working man, irritable and not very social.
So unlike his heroes that he romanticized.
This book is really fascinating and I highly recommend it to the armies of people who love his stories. The book does show the dark side of the whole mythology but it makes his accomplishment all the greater.
