Always with Us?: What Jesus Really Said about the Poor (Prophetic Ch - VERY GOOD
    Aug 06, 2025
men at ease have contempt for misfortune and regard it as the fate of those whose feet are slipping
The "thesis" of this fine book revolves around our Lord's words found in MT. 18...where Jesus says "the poor will always be with you". The typical exegesis found pertaining to this verse holds the view that the poor will always be poor due to...well, its mainly their own fault! The author, however, stays clear of this error and relates that her in-depth study shows that it's more likely that Jesus was giving us "our marching orders". In other words, our Lord knew his time with us was now very short...only two days...so He's telling us that we are to emulate his love and concern for the poor and marginalized. He's turning that ministry over to us. And yes, the other issues like evangelism are still crucial...but so too is loving our neighbor. So, we not only have the example of the parable of the "Good Samaritan", but the whole Jericho needs repair, for it contributes to entrapment of the poor.
