Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott (1986)
It was fun/interesting to me to read older English words which today have changed their popular meanings. The characters remain constant to themselves, which is refreshing, so not everyone lives happily-ever-after, in fact, you feel sad that the Jewess Rebecca gets the shaft, so to speak. Robin Hood and his merry men seem more authentic than Disney portrays them. Ivanhoe has courage, which ultimately could have lead to his death had not his antagonist allowed his love for Rebecca to stop him from inflicting harm on Ivanhoe. King Richard and Friar Tuck have interesting encounters, which adds good humor to the story. I'm keeping the book in my personal library.

The Schools We Need by E.D. Hirsch (1999, Paperback)
Hirsch doesn't beat around the bush in telling the reader why the majority of our school/educational systems are broken. He also offers a solution. If you teach school K-12 or beyond, you may want to read this. A Charter school in Colorado uses the book as one of its reference that it models itself from.
