Thoughtful and incisive. Provocative Lincoln scholarship at its best.
Thoughtful and incisive analysis by one of the world's most able Lincoln scholars. Beautifully written, deeply researched, and stimulating and (in the best way) provocative. Must reading for anyone interested in Lincoln and for anyone interested in biographical and critical method and scholarship.

A match for its subject
The noted literary critic P. N. Furbank has written an excellent biography of the French novelist, essayist, poet, author and thinker Denis Diderot (1713-1784). It is thoughtful, clever, and deeply wise -- a full match for Diderot himself.

Splendid and valuable short life of Thurgood Marshall.
The best short life of Justice Marshall ever written -- a landmark in legal and judicial biography, and in civil rights biography as well. Highly recommended.
