Great grounding in how a sextant actually works

There are two important aspects of any pursuit of this type: the theory and the operation. If you know the theory and you do not understand the instrument you are using, you will have problems. This book describes the instrument and how it works. It is important that you become proficient with the instrument, otherwise you don't know what the measurements mean or whether they are reliable. This book helps you solve that problem. This is a practical and readable description of the selection, operation and maintenance of the sextant. It explains how to evaluate and buy a sextant, adjustments, and the practical aspects of using it. For example, it describes the practical aspects of finding objects and corrections to the site. I've learned a lot about how to use a sextant from this book. It also explains the relative importance of various aspects of measurements. Also important. My expectation was that I would learn more about my sextant from this book. It clearly provided that. If you expect the same level of push-button-tell-me-everything accuracy that you get with a GPS, then pause and think about what happens when the lightning strikes or (far more common) what happens when your batteries are discharged or your electrical system fails (been there). When that happens offshore, you want to have a level of proficiency with, and understanding of the device so that you know where you are. This book, plus your time invested, will help provide that. It is also important to practice and understand the rest--but this helps you understand the instrument. Your time spent understanding the instrument is money in the bank. Better to read it now than to try to figure it out in a life raft.

Works great! Simplifies the process.

Comes with a good instruction sheet and reference links. The radio and Chirp have their quirks, but the cable works great. Makes programming much easier. I haven't had any issues with the cable itself. The other components require proper process, but no big deal. Just spend a little time with it. Then it's easy.
