subwoofer distortion

The subwoofer distorts badly even when the adjustment knob is barely turned up - probably a poor electronic design. The subwoofer box has a downward facing speaker. I fixed the problem by putting a 2 inch thick piece of foam rubber under the speaker cone - this dampens the excessive speaker vibration and mellows out the sub. Now I can turn the sub knob through its entire range without getting distortion. The speaker system sounds good now.
