640M gives a new and cooler life to a Toshiba L505D-LS5007
Processor was part of a series of upgrades/repairs for a 10 yr old Toshiba L505D-LS5007 motherboard with AMD graphics. Comparisons are against a Turion II 520M.
Wireless networking and bluetooth were performed by an upgrade to the Qualcomm Atheros (QCA 9377)Wireless AC card (Almost 10 times the speed vs the old 54Mb/S card) for all tests.
Ram was upgraded to 8GB of 800 Mhz DDR2 for all comparisons.
Hard drive is a Sandisk 1GB SSD Sata 3 ~ 540 MB/Sec transfer max.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The advantage of the Turion II Ultra 640M was the slight increase in operational speed (2.6 Mhz) and 4x the CPU cache vs the Turion II M520 (2.2 Mhz).
The 640M worked well but I didn't really see that much of an improvement over the Turion II M520 in the orginal system with the Passmark tests under Windows 10 Pro. Under Windows 7 home/32 bit the system is much quicker.
The biggest improvement however was a 10+ degree celsius drop in average operating temperature. The 640M did run a degree hotter while under stress to 86C. However the average operating temperature dropped to 63C instead of 76C. This will mean a lot to the processor lifetime and board components.
Another thing that I did notice was that response time decreased for the mouse and keyboard on the system after the processor upgrade. No more lag in responding to keystrokes or mouse clicks.
Additionally less lag time with video movies occured and the jerky picture disappeared when running under the M640 with 720 dpi graphics. This computer has no FHD support on the built in screen so 720 dpi is its max.
Had absolutely no install issues with this processor to the motherboard. Windows 10 however took 2 cold reboots to properly recognize. Upgraded bios recognized processor immediately.
The upgrades have made it able sail smoothly across the internet as well as making it much better for retrogaming.
