Lionel Powermaster 360 watt 6-82883
The Lionel Powermaster 360 is an excellent choice for powering a layout whether you choose to run your layout in command mode or conventional mode. I bought two of these so I could put my 4 Lionel 180 powerhouses to use. Initially I was worried about 20 amps to the track (There's a lot of debate) however I intentionally derailed two different lionel legacy engines (one diesel and one steam) two separate times to see how the powermaster 360 would regulate the power in such a setting. IT DID A FANTASTIC JOB! No damage to either of the locomotives (yes I opened each of them and checked the boards).
With my test I am completely satisfied that my engines will be safe on the layout. The lionel 360 powermaster has completely been revamped compared to the older lionel TPC 300 and 400 unit.
Come to think of I may not have needed two of the 360 powermasters, I will keep them for the eventual expansion of my layout.
Lastly in regards to safety I will also be adding PSX AC circuit breakers (I tend to be overbearing when it comes to circuitry). Although they are not needed AT ALL with this unit.
I highly recommend this product and with the use of proper wiring techniques (Star Wiring - google search), your layout will perform the way you have dreamt of.
