Penelope Cruz is good. She has got reactions and inflections that make watching this movie worthwhile. The movie, as a whole, however, is a wreck. It starts with an actual wreck and, I'm sorry to say, it never recovers. There is a lonely orphan who experienced the random violence that children commit against small, defenceless animals, and there is an extremely vulnerable incest victim who never gets a break. It is that simple. The hardluck story is the story of Italia, but I doubt that you can find deep meaning in that.
