Looks scarier than it 'sounds' when read
I thought this was a fun story. The wording gave it a modern feel in set up, but the adventure 'style' was like old times....simple funny. I liked/loved the happy ending. It is definitely wrapped up in a manner that is consistent with most childrens stories, boom, boom!, boom!!, boom!! boom!!! everything is resolved/comes together. I don't want to give out too much more info and give the story away. The pictures, like the cover give the impression of a MUCH scarier story than I found it. With the author being Dean Koontz, I was concerned how weird/scary/strange this story would get. I enjoyed it a lot, and want to share it with my niece who is in first grade.
Also in Santa's Twin's favor: I will say, that in the best traditions of Disney or Aesop's fables, there are a couple distinct morals imparted in this story.
Dislikes? If I have to pick something, then maybe the modern portion of the story. You'll know when you get to it.
Sorry, I'm not the best in cohesive explaining. Hopefully, my points are clear enough.

Not wowwed by the publication, but saved me the trip
I bought this "paperback" [ which is a two book set; yes paperback, but housed in a printed cardboard slide-in] for 99 cents. It was so inexpensive, and who knew WHEN I would ever see the real place?!? I am no book reviewer, so this is all just my reaction/opinion.
I was pretty disappointed in the contents. One book focused on the architecture of the building, which I had little or no interest in. The second book was of the gardens/landscaping/sculptures. I liked it much better, but the method of display and content of the photos was a disappointment for me. I am big into plants and they were nice, but not what I would of expected of a publication with the name Getty associated with it. Heck for quite a few pictures, I felt I could of very well taken the photos. Maybe THAT was their intention. I see this is was sold as a souvenir publication. Maybe they were trying to portray what the average visitor would of taken in photos?!? The colors even seemed washed out on many photos. Like what happens when you shoot on too bright of a day or just the wrong time ( afternoon) of a day.
If you are looking for color that pops or striking photos, there aren't really a whole lot of them. The right time of day would of done that for them, I feel.
Garden book still. If you just wanted to see what was there, this does that. There were a couple very striking shots of their modern representations/approaches to running streams and water flows - use of squared concrete in alternation with aggregate like surface with water flow, to suggest a stream. Smoothed surfaces with chipped edging coming together with out-flowing water to suggest a mountain spring. Other than those, I was left very wanting and will probably give the book away.
The Getty Center book seemed to me to be a series of very uninspired shots. No one shot left an impression with me enough to mention it here. Again, time of day, lack of interesting lighting play. My husband, who was an architecture major in college had much the same reaction as I did, so I don't believe I am too off base.
BottomLine: Don't pay full cost if you buy. Please forgive me if I have offended anyone's sensibilities.

Captivating story of two girls adventure and lives moving into a house near a forest
I'm in my fifties, an American. I found the book a cute and FUN read! I fell in love with Totoro without knowing the background story1 I just love his personality & smile(so far)
I really like the descriptions of Totoro size/form. And, now I know that there are little/small ones= In blue and gray!
I really like the interactions/conversations of all the characters.
I highly recommend this story. The description of the forest make it an adventuresome place of beautiful and mystery, but make it obvious that it can be a scary place.
I found the characters very believeable and real.
