Underated Black Sabbath Live Set And Group Line-Up
Black Sabbath has survived many line-up changes since its debut self-titled album way back in 1970. Cross Purposes Live is a perfect example of how far the band has strayed from the Osbourne and Dio fronted versions of Sabbath. Here we have the third (arguably the fourth- remember Glenn Hughes from the Seventh Star record?) vocalist, Tony Martin, phoning in a less-than-stellar performance. I heard somewhere that Martin recalled having been suffering the effects of a cold when asked about his sub-par singing on the live album. Now I must admit, after many years, Tony Martin's voice has really grown on me. He really is a phenomenal vocalist. Just listen to Eternal Idol, Headless Cross, Tyr, the studio version of Cross Purposes, and Forbidden. His vocal lines are more melodic than either the monotone of Osbourne, or the brimstone and fire grit of Dio. Unfortunately the tapes were rolling on a Martin-fronted Sabbath when all cylinders were not firing. His voice is noticeably weak, often trailing off at the end of a lyric. The band sounds tired, playing many old songs that don't really suit Martin at all. On the other hand, it is enjoyable to hear Martin-Era songs in a live context. This is why the set gets an Excellent rating. Here is the only official chance to hear (and see by way of VHS tape) a Black Sabbath that received little kudos during its time. Tony Martin is a GREAT singer. His time in Black Sabbath is sadly just a footnote in the history of a dynamic rock dynasty. Cross Purposes Live is for die-hard fans only; those who appreciate all incarnations of Black Sabbath, not just marquee names such as Osbourne and Dio.

Montrose is one of the greatest rock guitarists and is sorely under appreciated.
Mostly instrumental with some vocals. Very 80’s sounding in the best possible way. This cd is super hard to find on any label. I was lucky enough to find it on the Wounded Bird label for a very reasonable price. Ronnie Montrose may be gone but he will never be forgotten. Buy all his records- they are all well worth the listen.
