    "The Making of Toro"
Mark Sundeen, I love. Car Camping is his stream of conciousness writing about a time in his life, following desire and the need to move. His descriptions of the desert, sleeping outside and meeting people is beautiful. Car Camping is an unhearalded gem. It is a little scary, a little sexy, and Mark grows where he plants himself. I read it anytime I want to feel better. I would travel with Mark anywhere. I didn't completely understand the need for the imaginary protagonist in "The Making of Toro." Sometimes I felt like I'd missed a real book called "Toro". I missed Mark and his raw voice and shenanigans. I missed him a little in the book starring Sig Hansen, although I liked the book and thoughts of Hansen's Post-It pads jumps into my thoughts. Mark is his best for me when he doesn't know what is next for him, but follows his longings faithfully. A wonderful person, Mark lets us see the underside of people, as well as himself, without excuses. "Car Camping" reads wonderfully honest and not at all pretty and acceptable. "Car Camping", this is how people really are. Keep traveling, Mark. And keep writing. You need no other tricks but your pen, and your journal.

This product is not available in the USA. I have a skin condition. This helps a lot.

    "Armadillos & Old Lace"
How can a man who writes such terrible music, (and lyrics!) write so beautifully? "Armadillos & Old Lace", the title can tell you, weaves triteness into beauty. And often, old phrases reappear and come back better. His secret language bears studying. R.Friedman never loses a theme, however obscure. Character descriptions shine when his people eat, or especially talk. The way he comes back to an obscure thought, or observation is very Zen. I love to eat with his crew, even when I hate what they are eating. "Armadillos" is a terrific mystery, and a true story of his lost pet Ranch in Texas. You will believe in his father, described here, and like him. Kinky, the character, is loyal to his friends. He finds goodness in the people he loves, and the animals that need him. The saddest thing that ever happened to the real Friedman, is teased out over all his novels. And then, possibly, he tells the true story. Big Dick left me touched deeply by what might have been, if not for an accident, or fate, if you believe in that. And, how can you not? We all have some of that, don't we?
