A VERY GOOD navigational aid.
7 of 7 found this helpful I better start by saying that this is the first digital navigation aid I have ever owned so there may be better models available. I use it with Map Source Topo V2 loaded and Quo Version 2 on my PC computer.
Purpose of purchase:
A companion to an OS map and Silva Compass to verify my position and record the tracks I have taken.
How well it works?:
In most respects it is excellent.
The screen has great resolution and the battery life is good once the unit has been given a firmware upgrade to the latest version. (I use it with minimum backlight.)
The positioning is accurate to about 5 metres even in the middle of a wood in thick foliage.
The user interface is intuitive and the Rock and Roll wheel great for zooming in to get a closer view. Way-Point marking is a doddle too. I prefer this to the Origon touch screen. You may not.
In the car it works well off a plug in Mini USB power adapter supplied by Garmin. Backlight comes on and stays on.
Things I don't like:
It takes about a minute to lock on to its position when it is first switched on. (Don't they all?)
In maximum detail at a resolution more than 300 feet it initially takes too long to update the view.
The base map is very, very basic. Buy Topo or even better OS Discoverer from Garmin. (Also use Quo to give you paper print out of OS Maps and planning and tracking facilities. I think it is absolutely brilliant and coupled with a printer and laminator, the best value for OS maps in the UK!)
Both Garmin maps are out of date. Where I live, in Topo V2, a whole new development is missing as is a major track that has been present since the late 1960s.
Recommendations:
Don't make it your principal navigational aid. It can not replace an OS Map and compass because the batteries may die or the satellite aquesition become
unreliable.
Buy one, because it is the first Garmin to offer great screen resolution, brilliant Geocaching facilities and more at a price that can be about £100 less than the Oregon.

Good Battery life
So long as you turn off or keep the back light low, the battery lasts about a fortnight. Compared to my tablet and phone, it is brilliant
