Tales of the City More Tales of the City (Laura Linney, Paul Hopkins) Reg 2 DVD

Great collection of a landmark series.
Great to get these first two series of the television adaptations of Armistead Maupin's peerless chronicle of life and love in 1970s San Francisco, with the performance by a very young Laura Linney a standout but there are many, many funny and moving characters here. A real evocation of real life...though somewhat heightened. Mrs Madrigal's story is as picaresque as anything in Boccaccio.

Superior transfer of the "normal" cut of this De Palma psychodrama
John Lithgow's multiple roles make this De Palma variation on "Psycho" a fascinating melodrama. My one (little) gripe is that I (erroneously) thought it contained the fabled original cut (that has some structural differences to the cinema release) and it doesn't (though it does contain a special feature where they discuss this other cut at length). De Palma's filmmaking hand is very strong in this one and, as I say, Lithgow's performance makes the purchase practically essential.

Three Sisters in Vietnam
Tran Anh Hung is (justifiably) considered one of the most talented filmmakers working in Vietnam. today. His slow, meditative pacing allows for nuance in both characterization and storytelling and his visual style is frequently breathtakingly beautiful. This film builds on his previous "The Scent of Green Papaya" in its detailed depiction of the small joys and pains of being part of a family. The Vietnam setting gives this film a tropical languor that suits its incremental storytelling. A gentle masterpiece that rewards repeat viewing.
