magical realism meets noir
Surprisingly, this nicely done film never saw theatrical release, going from Tribeca to dvd. It was one of the last half dozen or so movies that Anton Yelchin made before his untimely passing. The great trick it pulls off is to blend a noirish
crime story (featuring John Hawkes as a comically evil bad guy) with a romantic tale which blends fantasy/magical realism into the mix. Zooey Deschanel plays the lovable, doe-eyed femme fatale, who may or may not be a ghost (also true of her mentor played by Frank Langella). The dialog is sometimes stilted in a sort of David Mamet manner, which will play out as interesting to some and oddly stilted to others. I would say if you like Coen Bros.-type oddness, you will like this film.
