MSI , X79A-GD45 PLUS MOTHERBOARD FOR PARTS / REPAIR ONLY!!!
May 17, 2018
Good for a board of this price point.
This is the MSI X79A-GD45 Plus. Its extremely hard to come by, and is quite expensive used. This is a dual BIOS board, with some fickle overclocking settings. I had to downgrade the BIOS from 17.9 to 17.4 in order for my overclock to actually register in windows. Im running the i7 3820 at 4.3 GHz currently, and may try for a heftier overclock. The VRM heatsinks on this thing aren't too horrible, but they could use a small fan.
The X99S gaming 7 is an interesting board with excellent overclocking features, more than one would expect for a board of this price. The red and black accents will provide a robust color scheme for most rigs, while support for quad channel 128 gb DDR4 is quite handy and leaves room for expansion in the future. The 5930k it was paired with can handle 4.5 Ghz on 1.22 volts on the vcore. Ram was tricky. With 16 (8x2) gb corsair vengance RGB, XMP to 3200 was stable for about a day before I had to bring it back down to 2400 to post. Paired with a GTX 980 makes for a very balanced gaming rig. Upgrading from a 3820 boosted performance in CPU bound titles such as CSGO, TF2 (scales with clock speed more than anything which is bad), and Far Cry 5 quite significantly.
