Well-researched biography of a creative genius
I was fascinated by this exhaustively researched biography of George Herriman, cartoonist of the classic feature "Krazy Kat". In addition to covering the life and career of the notably modest Herriman, the author digs into the archives of Herriman's ancestors to reveal his Creole family background from New Orleans, and Herriman's family's bold move to pass as white in California. Friendships with other cartoonists, newspapermen, and even writers for the early movies are detailed, as well as Herriman's trips to the American southwest that would influence his cartoon style. The book is illustrated with snippets of Herriman's cartoons, often with poignant commentary on the text. As a lover of early cartoons, I greatly enjoyed this biography showcasing Herriman's creative genius. Highly recommended.

Captain Haddock's amazing and amusing vocabulary makes a great read
Captain Haddock is one of the funniest characters in the Tintin graphic novels by Herge. One of the things he is known for is his colorful vocabulary when cursing, consisting of real multisyllabic words that are not actual curses (though they would undoubtedly be impressive when shouted). This book is not only a record of Haddock's varied curses throughout the series, it gives definitions (and some illustrations) of what the words mean, arranged alphabetically. It also features characteristic panels from Tintin showing the Captain in rant mode. Fun for Tintin fans and also those who love words, this book was an entertaining (and educational) read from start to finish.
